Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture originating in India. Texts from the Indian subcontinent describe principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement, and spatial geometry. Vastu Shastras incorporate traditional Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. The designs aim to integrate architecture with nature, the relative functions of various parts of the structure, and ancient beliefs utilizing geometric patterns (Yantras), symmetry, and directional alignments.

According to Vastu Shastra, the Lord of Fire—Agni—prevails in the southeast direction, making it the ideal placement for the kitchen. If that’s not possible, the northwest direction is acceptable. Avoid the north, northeast, and southwest as they can negatively impact relationships among family members.
All the objects inside the kitchen represent fire, so gas stoves, cylinders, microwave ovens, and toasters, among other appliances should be placed in the south-east part of the kitchen. Also, these items should be placed in a manner which will compel a person to face the east while cooking. This will ensure positive energy.
According to Vastu Shastra, the washbasins and cooking range, which include the gas cylinder and oven, should never be kept on the same platform or parallel to each other in the kitchen, as both fire and water are opposing elements, thereby hurting a person's behavior. It can create unintentional fights between couples and family members.
Washbasins, washing machines, water pipes, and kitchen drains should ideally be in the north or northeast part of the kitchen. However, avoid overhead water tanks in these directions—place them in the west of the house instead. Maintaining a balance between fire and water brings prosperity, health, and harmony.
